Position: Professor in the School of Interactive Computing
Department: College of Computing
Area of Specialization:
I am a learning scientist, which means that I study how learning takes place and how we can improve it. I focus on computing education, with a particular interest in how computing can be more relevant, motivating, and usable for non-computing majors and professionals.
Interesting projects:
Project "Georgia Computes!" -- We have an alliance with the Girl Scouts, YWCA, State Department of Education, and University System of Georgia to try to improve computing education across the entire state. We teach robotics and animation in programs for girls; teach high school teachers how to improve their computing courses; and help undergraduate faculty create new kinds of motivating courses. Storytellr -- We are working on an add-on to Flickr that will help users create real stories (not just slide shows) with their digital photos.
Campus/Student Involvement:
I developed the Media Computation approach that we use in CS1315 and in CS1316. We involve undergraduates in our research projects, especially "Georgia Computes!" to work with students at all ages (from Girl Scouts to undergraduate faculty) in our workshops.
